Reading Adinkra: Symbol Without Imitation

Adinkra symbols carry specific, considered meaning, developed over generations and still in use across Ghana today. It would be careless to reduce that meaning to decoration on a garment simply because the shapes are visually striking.

What we take from Adinkra instead is a way of thinking about proportion and repetition: how a single symbol can hold weight through spacing and placement rather than size alone. That logic shows up in our work through seam placement and panel proportion far more often than through printed pattern.

It is a slower, less literal way of drawing on tradition, and one we expect to keep returning to as the studio grows.
